Vietnam Festival’s October residency shone a spotlight on Đờn Ca Tài Tử, the southern Vietnamese art form blending courtly and folk sounds. Partnering with master musicians from Bạc Liêu, we hosted intimate workshops where attendees learned how the đàn kìm and đàn tranh converse.
Why It Matters
Across the diaspora, fewer than 50 youth ensembles still practice Đờn Ca Tài Tử regularly. By pairing elders with Gen Z composers, Vietnam Festival is digitizing sheet music, recording oral histories, and offering micro-grants so the tradition stays alive in Canadian community centers.
“When I pluck the đàn tranh at Vietnam Festival, I feel both my grandmother’s voice and my daughter’s curiosity harmonizing.” — Master Mai Phương
What’s Next
Look for pop-up jam sessions during Lotus Street Beats, where Lisa Chu’s band will remix Tài Tử motifs into synth-driven sets. We’ve also launched an online archive for educators; reach out if you want to host a workshop.
